Moving to a new city can be rough - knowing those places to find a bargain, knowing where you can get cheap fuit and veggies. Canberra can be additionally difficult, because our perfect planning system hides many of these things from view. Below is a rough guide to places to get food, drink and more.
Woolworths
The closest Woolies to UC is at Belconnen Mall. It has everything you would expect in a Woolworths, and has a Woolworths Liquor store attatched to it. The next closest is at Kippax, whcih has an odd layout, so if you are used to the regular Woolies set up be prepared to be confused...
Coles
Again the closest store to UC is at Belconnen Mall, but if you have a car it is worth heading to Jamison - if only because the parking is easier (and free).
Aldi
There are Aldi's at Jamison and Kippax. Good for the staples of life, and an odd cheap TV.
Supabarn
The supermarket in the Kaleen Shops is a Superbarn. Superbarn in Civic is a haunt for ANU students seeking out the best chickpeas, lentils and rice - with an excellent range of interesting and exotic food. The Superbarn at Kaleen is alas just a regular supermarket.
Convenience Stores
There are convenience stores located in the shops of almost every Canberra Suburb. I guess you could count the UCU store in the hub as one, except it is only really convenient during the week - there are no local shops in Bruce.
7/11
The closest Slurpee is about 3 hours away in Cambelltown. There are no Seven-Elevens in Canberra - yet.
The Belconnen Fresh Food Markets
Cheap fruit and vegies, a wide range of meat, and the odd gourmet food story - if you know what you are doing you can get a good bargain here. But remember, fresh food is only a bargain if you eat it and dont throw it away after things grow out of it in the bottom of the fridge.
St Vincent de Paul
Cnr Rae and Purdue Steets
Belconnen
Vinnies are always good for second hand clothes, and even if you dont wan to be wearing them every day, perfect for fancy dress and compulsory for the annual op-shop ball.
YMCA
Weedon Close
Belconnen
The YMCA also does a trade in second hand goods from their Belconnen location
