Housing - finding somewhere to live

Accommodation in Canberra can be cripleingly expensive - even for people that earn full time wages. Students in recent years have struggled to find rental accommodation off campus. It is not unusual for 30 or more people to show up to a rental property viewing.

On campus accomodation also fills quickly, with the campus operating at or just below capacity in recent years. You need to get in early to secure a place. Generally on campus accommodation is less stressful to secure - you either have it or you don't, whereas securing a rental property is typically more difficult than getting a job!

On Campus:

You should be aware that On Campus accommodation still involves signing an agreement. You are committed to paying for the period that you sign up for.

Arscott House
We are probably a bit biased about this one, because we run it, but we believe Arscott House represents the best value student accommodation at UC. In 2009 the rent is $230 per week including Breakfast and Dinner. To apply visit the Arscott House Website (www.arscotthouse.com.au).

Campus Living Villages
Campus Living Villages provide the bulk of accommodation on campus - all of it uncatered. If you are looking for a room, they have lots of them. Rates for 2009 are between $135.50 per week to $297 per week. Give them a call on (02) 6206 3500

Off Campus:

allhomes.com.au
This well designed and easy to use website provides the easiest to navigate list of rental properties in Canberra. Most real estate agents list properties on allhomes, and there is a list of upcoming exhibitions on the page as well.

UCSA Clasifieds
Provides space for listing rental accommodation and share housing targetted specifically at UC Students. You can also find ads for second hand furniture, books, tv's and just about everything a student might need.

Tenants Union of the ACT
Provides excellent advice to tenants, including how to draw up an agreement for a share house arrangement. The Tenants Union also provides assistance and advice if you get into trouble during your lease.
